Between each bone in your neck is a disc that acts as a shock absorber. When your neck loses its natural curve (often due to forward head posture or a whiplash injury), the front of these discs are crushed under immense pressure.

Eventually, the soft inner jelly of the disc pushes backward, breaking through the outer wall and pressing directly against the spinal cord or exiting nerve roots. This causes severe cervical radiculopathy—shooting pain, burning, and numbness down the arm.
